14
πYou are the children of the LORD your God. You must not cut yourselves, or shave the hair on your forehead because of the dead. 2 πFor you are a holy people for the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a special people for himself, above all the nations that are on the earth.Clean and unclean
3 πYou must not eat any abominable thing. 4 πThese are the beasts which you may eat: the ox, the sheep and the goat, 5 the deer and the gazelle and the roe deer and the wild goat and the ibex and the antelope and the mountain sheep. 6 πAnd you may eat any animal that divides the hoof and has the hoof split in two, and chews the cud among the animals. 7 πHowever of those that chew the cud, or of those that divide the hoof in two, you must not eat these: the camel and the rabbit, and the coney; for they chew the cud but do not divide the hoof; therefore they are unclean for you. 8 πAnd the pig, because it divides the hoof, yet does not chew the cud, is unclean for you. You must not eat their meat or touch their carcass.
9 πOf all that are in the waters you may eat these: all that have fins and scales you may eat. 10 But you must not eat anything that does not have fins and scales; it is unclean for you.
11 You may eat any of the clean birds. 12 πBut you must not eat of these: the eagle and the vulture and the osprey 13 and the glede and the kite and every kind of buzzard 14 and every kind of raven 15 πand the owl and the night hawk and the cuckoo and every kind of hawk, 16 the little owl and the great owl and the swan 17 and the pelican and the gier eagle and the cormorant 18 and the stork and every kind of heron and the lapwing and the bat.
19 πAnd all the teeming things that fly are unclean for you; they must not be eaten. 20 But you may eat every clean bird.
21 πYou must not eat anything that dies of itself. You may give it to the foreigner who is inside your gates, so that he may eat it; or you may sell it to a foreigner. For you are a holy people for the LORD your God. You must not boil a young goat in its motherβs milk.
Tithes
22 πYou must tithe all the produce from your seed that the field yields year by year. 23 πAnd you must eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herds and of your flocks, in the presence of the LORD your God, in the place which he chooses to put his name there, so that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always. 24 πAnd if the way is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry it, or if the place which the LORD your God chooses to put his name is too far from you, when the LORD your God has blessed you, 25 then you shall turn it into money, and secure the money in your hands and go to the place which the LORD your God chooses; 26 πand you shall spend that money for whatever you desire, for oxen or for sheep or for wine or for strong drink or for whatever you desire, and eat there in the presence of the LORD your God, and rejoice, you and your household, 27 πand the Levite who is inside your gates. You must not neglect him, for he has no portion or inheritance among you.
28 πAt the end of three years you must bring all the tithe of your produce in that year, and store it inside your gates; 29 πand the Levite (because he has no portion or inheritance among you), and the foreigner and the fatherless and the widow, who are inside your gates, shall come and eat and be satisfied, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work which your hands do.
